Kirtan is a way to open and expand energy in order to access the stillness within.
Kirtan is a practice of Bhakti Yoga that helps us to bypass the mind and come into direct contact with the heart. Utilising sounds in a sacred way crosses all cultures. Use of sacred sound and connecting to a higher essence through sounds can be done in different languages; however, kirtans generally use Sanskrit mantras. Kirtans are sung in a group in a call and response fashion. They begin slowly and build up to an exalted crescendo. Kirtans are traditionally accompanied by a mridanga (drum) which holds the rhythm, a harmonium (piano box) and manjeera (cymbals). In modern times many other instruments are also used. The elements of kirtan are the mantra, melody, rhythm and most importantly the heart!
